Caffyn Places

Interestingly there are many places throughout the world which have been named Caffyn ie. Caffyn Rise in Billingshurst in Sussex. Some of these are for more obvious reasons - many Caffyns have lived in Billingshurst; others are not so obvious ie. a waterfall in Wales!

Below is a list of the places I have found so far. Please let me know if you know of others and if you can help with why places have been given their name or with photos of the area I would be very grateful.

CAFFYN VALLEY - Antarctic

I found this valley only recently. It is described as a cirque type broad valley free of ice between Mount Bastion and Gibson Spur in the Willett Range, Victoria Land. It was named after James M Caffin who was a New Zealand Antarctic historian.

Needless to say, there is no multimap or streetmap link showing this location but using the latitude and longitude (77 S and 160 E) it it somewhere in the image to the right.

CAFFIN AVENUE - New Orleans, USA

There are lots of references to Caffin Avenue on the internet - it is in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, an area described as the murder capital of the world, which was devasted by Hurricane Katrina last year. The area is bordered by the Industrial Canal and the Florida Avenue Canal.  On Caffin Avenue are/were the New Orleans Public Library - the Martin Luther King branch (destroyed); the Caffin Avenue Adventist Church and school (up to 20ft of water); and the home of Fats Domino (damaged).

I found this comment from a resident of Caffin Avenue “Hardly anything has changed in the way of cleaning the damage and destruction that was seen in August/September 2005. Cars are still on roof tops, houses off their foundations and in the middle of streets, no working lights or traffic signals, and we are still under a curfew and cannot be in the area or at our houses after 6 pm, although I'm still paying a mortgage. Not one red cent has gone into fixing our neighborhood

TALA-Y-CAFFYN - Wales

I am not so sure that this one has anything to do with Caffyns - the multimap location is for Tala-y-Cafn whilst a local postcard refers to the area as Tala-y-Caffyn.i

CAFFYNS RISE - Billingshurst, Sussex

CAFFINS CLOSE - Crawley, Sussex

CAFFYNS CROSS - Lynton, Devon

CAFFYNS HALT - Lynton and Barnstable railway, Devon

CAFFIN PARK - Dover Heights, Sydney

The multimap link does not name the park, it is shown as a triangular shaped green area off Portland Street.
