Before I began my research I thought that people didn’t travel very much but over the years I’ve found that even those members of the family who lived their whole lives in one county still tended to move around it alot. Some members of the Caffyn family moved a lot further - to the other side of the world.
The oldest emigration record I have found was that of Margaret Caffin who emigrated to Barbados in 1666. I don’t know who she was but the source of the data suggests she was a servent who was taken out to work in the plantations in Barbados.
Records of the 22 million passengers who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924 on their way to America are available for searching at www.ellisisland.org. Below are brief details of the Caffyns and Caffins who made that journey. For most of these entries there is more information available, often personal details such as height and distinguishing marks. Be careful though; Charles Henry Caffyn (1854-1918) passes through the port several times; in 1908 he is noted as having a fair complexion and blue eyes but by 1912 he has a dark complexion and brown eyes!
For many of the entries it is possible to see copies of the original manifests and the variety of information gathered on each emmigrant. It is a site well worth visiting. If you have any problems obtaining more information please feel free to come back to me for more details.
The table is organised by date order showing the name as given in the manifest and the various versions of the Caffyn surname. The age is from the manifest and I have added in brackets a year of birth based on the year minus the age. Some Caffyns have passed through Ellis Island more than once.
